Y, si bien estamos \u00edntimamente conectados con nuestros cuerpos, tenemos poco o ning\u00fan conocimiento de c\u00f3mo funciona el sistema de atenci\u00f3n m\u00e9dica, hasta que nos enfrentamos a una crisis de salud.\u00a0<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span><span style=\"vertical-align: inherit;\"><span style=\"vertical-align: inherit;\">Mi labor de defensa de los derechos de los pacientes comenz\u00f3 con mi diagn\u00f3stico de c\u00e1ncer de mama en 2005. Si bien no soy una defensora oficial de los pacientes, ya que no trabajo dentro de un sistema de atenci\u00f3n m\u00e9dica y no tengo una certificaci\u00f3n formal, me he otorgado, con honores, el t\u00edtulo LEE, EXPERTO EN EXPERIENCIA VIVIDA.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span><span style=\"vertical-align: inherit;\"><span style=\"vertical-align: inherit;\">En los \u00faltimos 20 a\u00f1os, trabajar con pacientes a trav\u00e9s de Pink Fund me ha permitido asesorar y redireccionar a los pacientes a recursos de confianza. Y si bien he recibido formaci\u00f3n a trav\u00e9s de varios programas como Project Lead con The National Breast Cancer Coalition, he sido revisora \u200b\u200bde consumidores novata con el Departamento de Defensa, revisando propuestas de investigaci\u00f3n sobre el c\u00e1ncer de mama y soy miembro de varias juntas voluntarias, incluidas la Mesa Redonda sobre el C\u00e1ncer de Mama de la Sociedad Estadounidense del C\u00e1ncer, la National Breast Cancer Coalition y Value Based Insurance Design de la Universidad de Michigan, no soy una experta con varias letras despu\u00e9s de mi apellido, pero conozco expertos que pueden ayudar.\u00a0<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span><span style=\"vertical-align: inherit;\"><span style=\"vertical-align: inherit;\">Hace poco asist\u00ed y habl\u00e9 en la Conferencia Directa de la ASCO en Lansing, Michigan, donde conoc\u00ed a Katherine Leng de Hologic. La prueba del \u00edndice de mama puede ayudar a las pacientes a tomar decisiones informadas sobre su riesgo de recurrencia y los efectos secundarios, a veces desafiantes, de estos medicamentos orales, recetados durante 5 a 10 a\u00f1os.\u00a0<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span><span style=\"vertical-align: inherit;\"><span style=\"vertical-align: inherit;\">Una querida amiga m\u00eda est\u00e1 tomando medicaci\u00f3n endocrina y est\u00e1 experimentando numerosos efectos secundarios desagradables que afectan su calidad de vida.\u00a0<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span><span style=\"vertical-align: inherit;\"><span style=\"vertical-align: inherit;\">Al conocer a Katy, pude dirigirla a una fuente informada que la redirigi\u00f3 a otra fuente informada que ahora le proporcion\u00f3 a mi amiga datos s\u00f3lidos y preguntas para hacerle a su m\u00e9dico sobre c\u00f3mo reducir la dosis o continuar tomando el medicamento seg\u00fan lo prescrito.\u00a0<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span><span style=\"vertical-align: inherit;\"><span style=\"vertical-align: inherit;\">Ya sea que le hayan diagnosticado c\u00e1ncer, una afecci\u00f3n de salud cr\u00f3nica o una enfermedad rara, una de las mejores maneras de defenderse es solicitar hablar con un navegador o defensor de pacientes en el lugar donde recibe atenci\u00f3n.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span><span style=\"vertical-align: inherit;\"><span style=\"vertical-align: inherit;\">Si bien usted puede ser su mejor defensor, no dude en pedir ayuda.
